Team hippoGriffin: Trail Adventures for All
At Sassquad Trail Running, we believe the trails are for everyone. That’s why we’re launching Team HippoGriffin—a new program designed to support runners and hikers with a physical, intellectual, and/or neurodevelopmental disability who need a guide to explore the trails safely and confidently. For 2025, Team Hippogriffin will meet up for two training sessions and then race together at the Squatchy Leftovers in November.
How It Works
Runners and hikers who need support will be paired with volunteer guides to train together through group meet-ups on local trails. The first meet-up is on May 31st, the second meet-up is on October 11th; both sessions are at the South Mountain Reservation on the Squatchy Leftobers 5K course. These sessions will help build confidence, connection, and community by gaining familiarity with the race course.. The program will culminate at the Squatchy Leftovers Trail Party in November, where teams will take on the challenge together!

what is a hippogriffin?
Long ago, deep in the heart of the enchanted Squatchlands, the mighty HippoGriffin was born—a legendary creature with the heart of a lion, the soaring spirit of an eagle, the sturdy strength of a horse, and just the right amount of sass. The HippoGriffin isn’t just a mythical beast—it’s a symbol of courage, freedom, and adventure for every trail lover who dreams of exploring the wild with confidence.
